Get ready, Chinese enthusiasts! We’re thrilled to announce that a brand new Nincha app is here. After months of hard work, innovation, and collaboration with our amazing community, we’ve reimagined Ninchanese from the ground up to create a more intuitive, supportive, and engaging Chinese learning experience.

The Inspiration Behind the Change:

You, our dedicated users, have always been at the heart of everything we do at Ninchanese. Your love for our app and the way it has helped you make significant progress in your Chinese learning journey has been our driving force. However, we also listened closely to your frustrations and challenges, such as the overwhelming review system, the difficulty of speaking stages, and the tiresome task of typing vocabulary on a phone…

We realized that to truly address your concerns and create the best possible learning experience, we needed to do more than just update our existing app. It was time to take a step back, re-evaluate our approach, and start fresh. And so, the journey to the new Nincha app began.

Crafting a Better Learning Experience:

With your valuable feedback in hand, we set out to create an app that would cater to the needs of both beginners and advanced learners. Our goal was to build a more supportive learning environment that encourages exploration and growth, without the fear of making mistakes.

One of the most significant changes we’ve made is in our teaching philosophy. Instead of focusing solely on testing your knowledge, we now offer more guidance and support.

The new grammar mode

For instance, our new grammar building mode suggests correct word placement when you’re unsure, helping you learn progressively making sentences with new words.

screenshot of the grammar exercise

The new speaking mode

We’ve also tackled the challenge of speaking exercises head-on. Understanding the frustration of perfecting pronunciation in a tonal language like Chinese, we’ve made the learning process more forgiving. You can now retry sentences and even see the pinyin if you’re struggling, ensuring that you can practice and improve at your own pace.

screenshot of the speaking exercise

The new listening mode

Listening exercises have been revamped as well. While our previous stages were rewarding, they could be time-consuming and challenging. In the new app, you can simply listen to the sentence and select the corresponding blocks, making the process more engaging and accessible, or still choose to type what you hear for an extra challenge.

The new vocabulary and review mode

Another problem we wanted to overcome is feeling overwhelmed by the reviews. Reviewing the words you learned is essential to progress and consolidate your knowledge of the Chinese characters. But if you let them pile up, and never complete your reviews, that’s frustrating and detrimental to your learning progress. Completely counter-productive, even.

So now, you’ll be able to do your reviews faster by indicating whether you know a character or not, without typing it. It’ll be a lot easier to finish your reviews and consolidate your progress, which is the goal.

Learn Chinese in your own language

What’s more? We’ve translated the app and its content into several new languages, making it easier than ever to learn Chinese. Whether you’re a native speaker of English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, or Korean, you can now dive into learning Chinese in the language you feel most comfortable with. This expansion is all about breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive, accessible learning environment for everyone. 💗

A New Chapter Begins:

The journey to the new Nincha app has been one of discovery, innovation, and collaboration. Your feedback has been our guiding light in creating a better, more intuitive, and more supportive Chinese learning experience. There’s so much more we want to do and we hope we can make it together.

We can’t wait for you to experience the new Nincha app for yourself. Stay tuned for more updates, and get ready to embark on a new chapter in your Chinese learning journey with us.

Thank you for being a part of our community and for helping us shape the future of language learning. Together, let’s continue to explore the beauty and depth of the Chinese language, one character at a time.

Are you ready to take your Chinese learning to the next level? Ninchanese has a variety of worlds that cater to different skill levels and interests, so you can learn at your own pace and focus on the topics that interest you most. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from each world:

Worlds 1 and 2 (HSK 1 and 2) are perfect for beginners just starting their Chinese learning journey.

These worlds introduce a limited number of vocabulary words, focusing on the most essential words and phrases you’ll need to communicate about basic topics. In addition, you’ll learn how to introduce yourself, ask for directions, order food, and more – all of which are essential for getting around and interacting with people in China.

In addition to introducing essential vocabulary, these worlds also provide a solid foundation for the next worlds, helping you get a feel for the structure and grammar of the language. You’ll learn basic sentence structures and how to conjugate verbs in Chinese (you’ll see it is different than other languages), which will set you up for success as you move on to more advanced topics.

Worlds 1 and 2 are great starting points for anyone looking to learn Chinese and get a feel for the language. With time and regular practice, you’ll be able to communicate about basic topics and build a strong foundation for your Chinese learning journey.

World 3 (HSK3): An important milestone in your Chinese learning journey

World 3 (HSK3) is an intermediate-level world that builds on the foundation you’ve established in Worlds 1 and 2. In this world, you’ll learn more vocabulary words and encounter more complex grammar structures, which will help you express yourself more accurately and fluently in Chinese. In addition, you’ll learn how to use different times, form complex questions, and use more advanced sentence structures, all of which will help you express yourself more accurately and fluently in Chinese.

By completing World 3, you’ll have a much richer understanding of the Chinese language and be able to read (somewhat) easy Chinese newspaper articles. In addition, you’ll be able to understand more complex sentences and ideas and express your thoughts and opinions more clearly. This is an important milestone in your Chinese learning journey, as it marks the point at which you’re able to engage with more advanced texts and materials in Chinese.

Overall, World 3 is an important step in your Chinese learning journey, as it helps you build a more advanced foundation for the language and prepares you for more advanced topics. With time and regular practice, you’ll be able to progress through this world and continue to build your Chinese skills.

World 4 (HSK4): A high level of Chinese proficiency

World 4 (HSK4) is an intermediate and advanced-level world that builds on the skills you’ve developed in previous worlds. In this world, you’ll be able to discuss a wide range of subjects and confidently use all essential grammar points and structures. In addition, you’ll learn how to express your thoughts and opinions more effectively, ask for and give advice, and use more advanced vocabulary and grammar structures to convey more complex ideas.

By the time you complete World 4, you’ll have a high level of Chinese proficiency and be able to understand most of a Chinese show. You’ll be able to engage in more advanced conversations with Chinese speakers and express yourself fluently and accurately. Chinese people will consider your Chinese excellent if you can complete this world, and you’ll be able to communicate about a wide range of topics with ease.

Overall, World 4 is an essential milestone in your Chinese learning journey, as it marks the point at which you’ve developed a high proficiency in the language. With time and regular practice, you’ll be able to progress through this world and continue to build your Chinese skills, eventually reaching fluency.

World 5 (HSK5): Encounter a wide range of topics and situations

World 5 (HSK5) is an advanced-level world that builds on the skills you’ve developed in previous worlds. This world includes more challenging vocabulary and will help you understand everything in a show or difficult newspaper article. You’ll learn to use more advanced grammar structures and idiomatic expressions and encounter a wide range of challenging vocabulary words that will help you express yourself more accurately and fluently in Chinese.

By the time you complete World 5, you’ll have reached a high level of Chinese proficiency and be able to understand most spoken and written Chinese. You’ll be able to engage in advanced conversations with Chinese speakers and understand more complex texts and materials. If you can complete this world, you can consider yourself fluent in Chinese – meow!

Overall, World 5 is an important step in your Chinese learning journey, as it helps you develop a high level of proficiency in the language and prepares you for more advanced topics. With time and regular practice, you’ll be able to progress through this world and continue to build your Chinese skills, eventually reaching fluency.

World 6 (HSK6): A great way to further refine your skills and take your Chinese to an even higher level

World 6 (HSK6) is the last world being developed and will focus on high-level vocabulary and idioms, with fewer grammar points but more cultural elements in the dialogues. This world is designed for advanced learners who want to take their Chinese to the next level and become proficient in the more complex and idiomatic language.

In this world, you’ll encounter a wide range of challenging vocabulary words and idiomatic expressions that will help you express yourself more accurately and fluently in Chinese. You’ll also learn more about Chinese culture and customs, which will help you better understand and communicate with Chinese speakers.

While World 6 is more challenging than the previous worlds, it will take your Chinese to an even higher level and help you develop a high level of proficiency in the language.

Overall, World 6 is an exciting new addition to the Ninchanese curriculum and is an excellent way for advanced learners to take their Chinese to the next level.

The other courses: get specific

But that’s not all – Ninchanese also has unique worlds that cater to specific interests or needs. The Chinese Phrasebook, for example, is an excellent resource for anyone traveling to China, as it covers essential phrases and real-life situations. Here’s the stand-alone app.  And the Chinese Character Universe world is a fun and interactive way to learn Chinese characters.

So whether you’re a beginner or an advanced learner, there’s something for everyone on Ninchanese. With time and regular practice, you’ll be able to learn all the characters, grammar, and tones and have fun doing it. Just remember to stay motivated (as we say in Chinese: 加油!), and don’t be afraid to explore different worlds and see what interests you.

We hope you find this information helpful and encourage you to check out our curriculum at https://ninchanese.com/chinese-curriculum-hsk1-beginner-basic-speaker/ to learn more. If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us – we’re here to help you on your Chinese learning journey!

A new version of the Android app is out, and meowsome news: Traditional Chinese has graduated out of beta! Read on for details.

New android app for Ninchanese
New Android App version

There’s a new Android app out for Ninchanese, fully ready for Android 11 and 12!

It contains all the features you know and love to learn Chinese. And, it has the bonus of being stabler, safer and faster, especially on the newer versions of Android!

Download it now on the Play Store!

What about the old app?

Unfortunately, with the roll-out of Android 12, the previous app got buggy for an increasing number of learners. As a result, the app started crashing on launch. Maybe it even happened to you. As such, it was time to say goodbye to that version of the Android App.

The old app will soon be entirely deprecated, i.e., no longer in use. So, long live the new Android app instead!

logo of the new Android app for Ninchanese

Download it now from the Play Store.

We need your help! The app will exist by downloading it and leaving us a review

We know some of you have been using Ninchanese for a long time and how it’s helped you progress in Chinese. And now, we’re the ones who need your help! So, if you love Ninchanese and download the new Android app, please rate the app and leave us a review.

Every (positive) review you leave the App on the Play Store helps its ranking in the play Store. It does!

Think about how much ratings and reviews affect your decision to download an app. Everyone else works the same.

So ratings and (good) reviews are the best way to get new Chinese learners on Ninchanese. They are also the best way for the app to be visible on the Play Store. That’s because ratings, the words used in a review, and downloads are data Google cares a lot about. So they affect an app’s ranking.

In other words: the new Ninchanese Android app is starting over from zero, so we need your help! Your ratings and reviews will help it tremendously. So, please consider leaving us a 5-star rating and a review if you feel like it!

Even if you already rated the old app in the past, we need your support again! We’ll be forever grateful.

Traditional Chinese out of beta

The new version of the Android app is not the only new element in this update. Last but not least, traditional Chinese learning is now available for all.

After being in beta for a time and tested by many learners, learning with traditional characters is ready.

Thank you all for thoroughly testing Ninchanese with Traditional Chinese characters and sending us your feedback!

Want to start learning Traditional Chinese?

Choose between simplified and traditional Chinese on Ninchanese

Easily switch to Traditional Chinese in your settings.

All you need to do is head to your settings and, more specifically, to the learning tab. Choose whether you want to learn in Simplified or in Traditional Characters. That’s it; you’re all set!

Two independent learning tracks

Good to know: Learning in Simplified and Traditional Chinese are two independent tracks.

In other words, once you’ve switched to Traditional Chinese, you start from the beginning again. Your stats and progress will be at 0 again, so you can learn Traditional Chinese from scratch.

If you want to learn the simplified form again, all you need to do is switch back to that character set in your settings. Then, you’ll be able to pick up where you left off in simplified Chinese.

These settings allow you to quickly choose what character form you want to use and even learn both simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese if you wish to!

Traditional Chinese is essential in the Sinosphere. Traditional Characters are used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and many overseas Chinese communities outside Southeast Asia.

Because we care about keeping your payments safe, a new layer was added to our checkout process: 3D secure. It might not be the most fascinating topic in the world, but it’s essential for your online payment safety and ours. So, read on to learn more about 3DS (if you want) and why this means you can upgrade to a Premium Membership of Ninchanese with your mind entirely at ease.

Rest assured your payments are safe on Ninchanese, with the extra layer of security just added to the app: 3D Secure.

What’s 3D Secure? (A quick overview – skip ahead if you want)

If you regularly buy items online, you may already be familiar with the 3D Secure flow. You enter your card details to confirm a payment, and then a window appears where your bank asks you for a code or password to approve the purchase.

In other words, 3D Secure requires you to input an extra item of information at checkout. This item is used to authenticate your purchase because it is sent to your bank. Your bank uses this to confirm it’s really you behind the transaction. In short, double-check = extra peace of mind.

Why are we talking about all this? Granted, it’s a departure from our usual Chinese learning tips, resources to play and learn in Chinese, and vocabulary lists. But it’s a useful one because 3D secure has now been implemented on Ninchanese. What for?

Extra Safe Payments on Ninchanese

Now, when you upgrade to a Premium Plan on Ninchanese to progress in Chinese (and you totally should :D), you can rest assured your payment is extra secure. It always was, of course, but now it’s extra secure.
Why’s that? Because from now on, once you’ve entered your credit card information to upgrade, you may see a new window appear, with your bank’s name on it.

You’ll then be asked to enter more information, usually either a code sent to your phone or perhaps a password only known by you. Depending on the bank, the piece of extra information requested can vary. It could also be your fingerprint or even facial recognition.

While this might feel like an extra step to do, it’s, above all, an extra layer of protection for you.

With 3D secure added to the checkout process, you can be sure it’s a legitimate transaction going through. You already knew that, of course, but knowing Ninchanese is 3DS compliant is extra proof that you can trust the company.

3D secure also reduces the risk of fraud.

Better Fraud protection

For Ninchanese, too, it’s an extra layer of protection. That’s because 3D secure also allows the company better protection against fraudulent transactions. No Fraud, no unhappy times!

Compliance with European requirements

Additionally, adding these card security measures is a European requirement. As Ninchanese is based in France, we must do this to be compliant with the various customer protection acts and requirements the European Government has established, such as the  Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements in Europe. These requirements are very much on the consumer’s side (you) and are there to protect you online. We’re happy to support and be part of such protections!

Want to know more? Discover the entire course contents here.

Why do you need this course?

It’s a dream for many of us, to be able to work in China, the world’s first economic power. It’s a no-brainer that China’s economic growth is exceptional. Many of you spoke with us about their work experience in China.  Many work in IT, in the health sector, the import/export, fields that have become more and more competitive. Chinese are professional and also have high expectations. They want the best. There’s a beautiful place to carve out for yourself in China with the right knowledge. Knowledge such as being able to not only speak Chinese but to speak it professionally. They are expecting you to know how to act in a Chinese environment.

Why we’re legitimate to make it

To bring you the right knowledge to work in China and do business in China is exactly what we wanted to make with this course. We’ve discussed our shared experience and knowledge and got to really go in-depth into these fields. Sarah and me (Jean-Rémi) are Master graduates in international business and management specializing in Asia and particularly China. Xue who worked with us on this course is an international buyer for a hundred products in China. Her experience gave us a multitude of views on doing business with China. When you know China so well, and the Chinese language, it’s a real pleasure to be able to deliver this kind of course. And we hope it will change your life.

How this course was designed

We designed this course with an open mind and thought about multiple scenarios.  If we’re honest, we worked for a whole year making the course. We thought about what the course should contain long and hard and asked you what would be most appealing to you all.

For whom should this course be?

There are two main aspects of people working with China. Usually, they either do Business with Chinese companies or they work with Chinese speakers. Or both.

As such, we settled on designing this world to be a mixture of both. Many interactions are focused on dealing with partners or other businesses in Chinese. Finally, we explore the natural steps of a business relationship in a project’s process.
With this course, you’ll develop and deepen your skills to be ready for the opportunities arising from the Chinese market.

How deep should this world dive into the intricacies of navigating the Business World?

Then came the question of the level of professionalism we wanted to have. While tempting to make Lupishu a fresh graduate out of school, discovering what it’s like to work, this world was designed for all types of workers and business people, from entry-level employees to seasoned business people.

Should this Business course focus on particular fields or general use content?

The next question was how precise should the project Lupishu would be doing. Again, we had two big choices: focusing on specific fields or more general use content?

Then, we thought that going into niche vocabulary could be too nebulous and perhaps not entirely satisfactory. So we decided to work with general business vocabulary that will prove useful whatever your work field. You’ll learn about topics like sales, marketing, HR, R&D, communication, negotiations, and more! In other words,  with the Chinese Business Course on Ninchanese, you’ll learn about all the essential Business Vocabulary in Mandarin.

Customize your Business learning with the Nincha decks

Want to add more industry-specific vocab? With Ninchanese’s newest feature, the Nincha Decks, you can now also make custom decks for your professional field.  In addition to the Business course, it’ll be up to you to select the specific business vocabulary lingo you need. Then, create a Nincha deck to learn it. You have everything to be the most appreciated businessman in China.

What is this Chinese Business course in a nutshell?

The Business Chinese course is designed for professional people who need to understand what is discussed in meetings, negotiate in Chinese, or conduct business in Chinese.

In this course, you’ll learn the business culture and the details of industry-related aspects of Business Mandarin that prevail in the China market.

This comprehensive course focuses on soft skills and Industry professional skills.

The soft skills you’ll gain

The soft skill aspect emphasizes business etiquette and business cultural elements, such as formal and respectful greetings, small talk, and expressing one’s thoughts in Mandarin, leading to a favorable outcome after each meeting.

Ninchanese has gotten even more personalized. We’re happy to announce a fantastic new feature: the Nincha Decks! The Nincha Decks are your personalized word decks. You can now create your collections of Chinese characters and learn them whenever you want. Meowsome!

The Nincha Decks

Choose your way to learn on Ninchanese.

On Ninchanese, you have access to a complete learning journey to take you to Chinese fluency. The learning content on that path is optimized for you, so you don’t have to worry about it and focus on learning Chinese. This way of learning is fantastic, but some of you told us they also wanted to learn their own vocabulary. They wanted to be able to take detours on their learning journey and learn vocabulary earlier or differently than in the courses.

That made a lot of sense, and that’s why we created the Nincha DecksYou are now more in control of what you are learning on Ninchanese. Follow the level-based learning path or create your own word lists – you decide.

Nincha Decks: Your Personalized Word Lists

What’s a Nincha deck? It’s a set of vocabulary, a list of words you can build and learn.

We created an easy way to make a clean list directly from the dictionary. The process is very simple and fast. You can make a deck in less than a minute! There are three short steps to create one:

  1. Go to your deck page,
  2. Create a new stage with a name and a description,
  3. Search for words in the dictionary, either in characters, English or pinyin,

and boom, start making up your deck!

You can create as many decks as you want, of up to 30 words, each with a minimum of 5 words.

Powered by SRS

Once your deck is built, you’ll learn words the same way you do in a vocabulary stage on Ninchanese. This means you’ll use the learning algorithm in the app, which is based on spaced repetition, to memorize them.

Then, the characters you’ve unlocked in your deck will be added to your global reviews. From time to time, you’ll need to review these words, just before you forget them. This ensures you keep everything fresh in your memory. With the SRS in Ninchanese, you make sure you never forget what you learn.

Like for a vocabulary stage, you can also do your reviews by deck only to focus your reviewing on that deck.

The Nincha Decks are clever

Do you know what’s cool? With the Nincha Decks, there is no risk of duplicates. So, for example, you can’t add a word twice to the same deck. There are also no risks of learning a new word more than once. If multiple decks contain the same words, you’ll only learn that word once. The same goes with words you’ve already learned on Ninchanese courses.

Don’t worry about managing words; our learning system will sort that out for you! Once you’ve unlocked a word, you won’t have to learn that word as a new word again, even if it’s in a different list or stage. You might have to review it, like all words, but that’s it!

In the same way, if a vocabulary stage in the Story Mode uses a word you’ve already learned in a deck, our system will know, and you won’t have to learn it again. Neat!

What are the possibilities with this new feature?

Learn the Chinese vocabulary you want, when you want. You decide! What if you want to learn numbers in Chinese, but you are 5 or 6 stages away from that in Ninchanese? Before, you had to wait until you got to the Chinese numbers stage. With the Nincha Decks, you get to choose when it’s the right time for you to learn something.

Create your own word deck of Numbers and get learning! That’s what the decks are for.

Create decks of the words you learn in class

What if you are in a Chinese class or have a tutor giving you new words to learn regularly? Quite frankly, from my personal experience, we were given 20 characters to learn every two days in class. It was pretty hard to follow my memorization of these characters. I mean, how did I know I knew these words? Besides, it was troublesome to have my book and pen ready to learn them.

Now, with the Nincha Decks, you can easily save the words you see in class. Better yet, you can review them efficiently! A purrfect way to learn words in priority. Plus, you’ll be sure to always have the Decks in your pocket, and you’ll benefit from the memorization algorithm in Ninchanese to learn them. With the Nincha Decks, remembering the words you see in class will be easy

A super handy tool for you learners

Not only can you now create your own word decks, but you can also now create decks with different purposes! Imagine the possibilities. I can think of many ways to use them. For instance, if some characters have trouble sticking in your memory. Now, you can copy them in a deck and strongly focus on these characters. A deck could also be composed of 20 characters you want to focus on, like question words. Or the interaction words or expressions you’d like to use when speaking.

Focus on the words you want

What if you want to learn a very specific/professional vocabulary?

There are not many courses available for very specific vocabulary needs in Chinese or costly ones. I was discussing that with someone working in health insurance yesterday.

With the Nincha Decks, you can now create whatever word list you find useful! Problem solved. Focus on industry-specific vocabulary as much as you want! Everyone with their particular needs will be able to use Ninchanese completely. We help you reach fluency in Chinese with our courses, and you also have a way to specialize your Chinese.

Save unknown characters you encounter

We like to browse the Internet in Chinese, read books or manhua, watch videos in Chinese, and always encounter new characters we want to learn. Now with the Nincha decks, you’ll be able to add them to a deck and learn them. Then, next time you meet that word in a text or a video, you’ll understand it without difficulty. Isn’t that great?

Maybe you’ll pick up a word repeatedly said in a Chinese Drama and want to learn it. Perhaps you saw one of our tweets and wanted to learn that word, for example, cryptocurrency. Now you can! Just start a new deck and add words to it as you encounter them. Then, use the handy look-up tool to find any unknown word in the dictionary and add it to your deck.

Track your Progress

You can easily follow your progress learning words in a deck. As you unlock words in the deck, you’ll see your completion percentage. Then, you can see your memory level for each character on the deck page. The yellow stars tell you how well you know a word.

Manage your decks and words

Once the deck is created, you can change the title and the description of your deck. You can also manage the words in a deck and remove those you don’t want to learn anymore. You can also add more words to a deck whenever you want. You can add up to 30 words to a single deck. And lastly, if you don’t want a deck anymore, you can delete it.

Some other new updates:

The Nincha Decks are the biggest chunk of this update, but there are also a couple of other improvements.

  • You can now skip the story if you want. That’s very nice when you reset your account to restart your learning and don’t want to re-read the stories again.
  • The sound for some words was improved, and we improved how we handled the sound behind the scenes.
  • The dictionary’s search results have gotten better. The search algorithm has been improved to see more characters shown in better order.

When learning a language, there are lots of content we want to access but can’t yet, and there’s no certain path for that. Having the Nincha deck along with your learning will directly benefit your learning.

We know Ninchanese has helped many Nincha members make meowsome progress in their Chinese. We hope these new features we discussed together will help you learn Chinese even better.

Many of you had been asking for this new feature so enjoy! And if you’re not a Premium member yet, upgrade now and help us bring even more features to Ninchanese.

We hope you enjoy these updates! We love to hear your thoughts and will be happy to discuss them by email.

Why go dark?

Dark mode is a darker theme for Ninchanese, purrfect to put you in a Halloween mood.

Not only is dark mode a little scary, it’s also been proven to be more restful for your eyes. Dark mode is believed to be more relaxing because it uses less light. Thanks to that, you’ll find it improves overall your learning experience.

How do I turn on Dark Mode?

You’ll find the option to turn Dark Mode ON in your settings (see this FAQ page for the complete walkthrough). And if you prefer the classic white mode, then toggle it back to “classic”. It’s as simple as that!

As a meat-eater, you’ll find yourself in heaven in China. There are all sorts of meats to discover and eat! And by all sorts, we really do mean all sorts, including parts you perhaps seldom eat. So, to make deciphering a Chinese menu easier, there’s a whole new stage on Ninchanese dedicated to meats!  To give you a taste, here’s a list of the essential Chinese meat vocabulary to know … and that you’ll be learning on the app. Warning: this list of Chinese words for meat may make you very hungry!

A Meat Stall in Market, with different cuts of Meat

Ready to learn how to say different cuts of meat in Chinese? So you can easily order yummy slices of meat for your next 火锅 huǒ guō hot pot? Or finally, know what kind of meat is in Chinese dumplings? Then Chinese Meat recipes will hold no secret for you!

First, let’s see how to say meat in Chinese as well as Chicken, Turkey, Pork, Lamb, Duck, Veal, and Beef in Chinese.

And no, don’t even ask, we won’t be talking about cat meat in Chinese or any other kind of strange meat (it seems like people look up rat meat in Chinese? The horror). Dog Meat is sometimes eaten in winter because it’s super caloric meat to eat, but we’ve never come across any other type, so enough with the rumors! Alright? Here we go.

Types of Meat in Chinese

Word Pinyin Meaning
ròu meat
猪肉 zhū ròu pork
牛肉 niú ròu beef
小牛肉 xiǎo niú ròu veal
火鸡 huǒ jī turkey
鸡肉 jī ròu chicken meat
羊肉 yáng ròu lamb
duck

Good to know: In China, you’ll often come across dish names that simply say ròu Meat. In most restaurants (the obvious exception being Halal Uyghur restaurants ), 肉 will by default be pork. That’s because, traditionally, pork is the most consumed meat (or at least was in the past).
If you’re not sure whether it’s going to be pork or not or are trying to avoid eating pork, better check with your waiter/waitress first!

You’ll also often just see chicken, duck, yáng lamb, mutton, niú Beef on their own, without the 肉 thrown in, on a menu. So you might not see duck meat in Chinese, but you’ll definitely see 鸭 and a favorite, 烤鸭 Roast Duck!

Cuts of Meat in Chinese

Word Pinyin Meaning
chuàn skewer
里脊 lǐ ji tenderloin; meat loin
牛排 niú pái steak
肉片 ròu piàn meat slice
肉馅 ròu xiàn meat filling
碎肉 suì ròu chopped meat
肉丝 ròu sī shredded meat (often pork)
肉末 ròu mò ground meat; minced meat

Love meat skewers? You’re going to love these other street food dishes, then, we bet!
